Radiant Cut diamonds

The existence of the radiant cut diamonds today is credited to Henry Grossbard, who developed and patented this diamond cut in 1977. However, in 1994 the Grossbard family relinquished their sole ownership of the cut and put the radiant cut diamonds into the open market.

The trademark of radiant cut diamonds is their cropped corners. This feature lessens the susceptibility of the stones corners to chipping.  The overall features of this diamond cut are based from both the round brilliants and the emerald cuts. Radiant cut diamonds have similar classic and elegant look as the emerald cuts but have the brilliance of equal magnitude as the round brilliants.

The traditional and most common radiant cut diamonds are composed of 62 facets (25 on crown, 8 on the girdle, and 29 on the pavilion). While some radiant cut diamonds have 70 facets with 25 facets on the crown, 8 facets on the girdle and 37 facets on the pavilion.

What to look for when buying radiant diamond cuts

  • There is no standard value(s) for the length to width ratio if we talk about radiant cut diamonds. Thus, the choice is based on your preference to have a square (length to width ratio of 1.0) or a rectangular diamond (length to width ration of greater than 1.0). [Read more...]

Heart Shaped Diamonds & Rings

Heart Shaped Diamond Ring

The heart shaped diamond is also called as the “Hearth-Shaped Modified Brilliant”. Obviously, this diamond cut got this name because of its shape. This diamond cut is designed based from the traditional round brilliant cut that was modified to create a unique hearth shaped diamond.

Fifty nine facets which can be modified (depending on the cutter) into 6, 7 and 8 pavilion (main facets) is one of the main features of this cut.

The length/width ratio may vary depending on the buyers’ preference or the cutters themselves. Some heart shaped diamonds are thin with a length/width ratio of greater than one (1). Others are fatter and are designed with lower ratio that ranges from 0.85 to 1.0. Ideally though, the length/width ratio should be 0.98-1.02. Furthermore, heart shaped diamond should also have a table diameter and a total depth of 52-64% and 57-65%, respectively. [Read more...]

Palladium is one of rare and precious naturally occurring metals with glossy silvery white appearance. It belongs to the platinum group of metals and is a common component of many of the electronic devices. Palladium used to be popular in jewelry making during the Victorian era.

However, its popularity eased in the mid 20th century due to the increased popularity of gold in jewelry fashion. Recently, the use of palladium jewelry (wedding rings in particular) has been revived which is attributed to the increasing interest in white jewelry. For couples who prefer to have white wedding rings, they always go for the most expensive platinum wedding rings or the cheaper versions, the white gold wedding rings. Asscher Cut Diamonds : How to make the right choice ?

Asscher Cut Diamond

The first Asscher cut diamond was created by Asscher Joseph from Amsterdam, Netherlands in 1902. He was tasked to cut the biggest diamond ever mined in history, the 3,106ct Cullinan diamond. After he completed the task, he created the well known Asscher cut. This diamond cut became very popular in 1920’s. However, in 1930 its popularity diminished which lead to the stoppage of its production because of a very bad economic downturn during that era. Fifteen years later (1945), the Asscher Company reopened the business and continued creating the original Asscher diamond cut.

In 2001, another design of the Asscher diamond cut was created and this time the company decided to patent the design to prevent massive reproduction of their own product. This creation was then lead by the great-grand sons (Edward and Joop Asscher) of the man behind the original Asscher cut. This was the start of the modern Asscher cut diamonds or the Royal Asscher cut diamonds. [Read more...]
